What you Should Know

ID Badges

All Staff, Physicians, Students, and Volunteers are required to wear a Hospital Identification Badge which states their name, status and department. Medical Trainees will receive their Authorization Form for ID Badge from the DMES. ID Badges are obtained through Security Services on the Ground Floor, Barnicke Wing, room GB119 (located in the ER waiting room) from Monday to Friday between 1100 to 1200 hours.

Scrubs

Scrubs can be located at various areas within this hospital. No deposit is required, but we do ask that all used scrubs are kindly returned to the appropriate laundry areas. Scrubs can be obtained from most units in the Health Centre as well as the DMES room 5M-09.

Change Rooms / Showers

Men’s and Women’s change rooms and showers can be found on:

  • 2nd Floor Barnicke Wing, near the Operating Room
  • 1st Floor OLM Wing in Labour and Delivery / Post-Partum
  • 3rd Floor OLM Wing in Paediatrics.

Showers are also located on the 4th Floor Glendale Wing

Criminal Reference Checks

ll Physicians and Medical Trainees are required to have a Criminal Reference Check in order to be placed at St. Joseph’s Health Centre. Please ensure that this requirement is met prior to the start of the rotation. In the event that a criminal record is present, the Health Centre must be notified and the Chief, Department of Medical Education & Scholarship (DMES) will determine whether this has significant bearing on the trainee’s ability to participate in their assigned rotation in accordance with our policy.

A criminal reference check can be arranged through the Human Resources Department at St. Joseph’s Health Centre. Trainees can access this service on the first day of their rotation following registration with the DMES.

NB: If you are a University of Toronto (U of T) trainee, you will not be required to show hard copies of the above item providing your file on Med-SIS or POWER is completed in full with up-to-date information. If your information on the U of T systems is notcomplete, you will be required to show proof of the above. University of Toronto trainees include Visiting elective students/residents/fellows that have been registered with the U of T UME or PGME Visiting Electives Departments.

Vaccination & Immunity

All Physicians and Medical Students are required to be immunized in accordance the Public Hospitals Act 1990, Revised Statutes of Ontario, Regulation 965 and the Ontario Medical Association/Ontario Health Centre Association (OMA/OHA) Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols. All Physicians and Medical Students must meet the following non-academic requirements prior to clinical placements at St. Joseph’s Health Centre (SJHC), and may be asked to show proof of immunization status. Medical trainees are responsible for any costs incurred.

1. Tuberculosis – PPD/5TU (Mantoux)
Documentation of a baseline two-step Mantoux skin test is required unless they have:

  • Documented results of a prior two step test or
  • Documentation of a negative PPD within the last 12 months or
  • 2 or more documented negative PPD at any time but the most recent was >12 months ago. In which case a single test must be given.

Individuals who have received a BCG vaccination in the past are still required to meet the requirements as outlined above. Results must be measured in mm of induration. Pregnancy is NOT a contraindication for performance of a skin test. For positive skin test results a chest x-ray is required. The University/College must inform all positive skin test students to report symptoms of pulmonary tuberculosis immediately to the University/College. Refer to the OHA/OMA Communicable Disease Surveillance for additional information.

2. Red Measles, Mumps, Rubella – MMR
Documentation of laboratory evidence of immunity is required. If serology (blood work) results indicate non-immunity or indeterminate result, MMR vaccination (2 doses) is strongly recommended. In the event the student declines vaccination the University/College must counsel susceptible students of the infection risks related to their activities in the Health Centre and make the necessary arrangements to ensure appropriate patient assignments and inform the Health Centre accordingly.

3. Varicella
Documentation of laboratory evidence of immunity is required. If serology (blood work) results indicate non-immunity or indeterminate results, varicella vaccination (2 doses) is strongly recommended. In the event the student declines vaccination the University/College must counsel susceptible students of the infection risks related to their activities in the Health Centre and make the necessary arrangements to ensure appropriate patient assignments and inform the Health Centre accordingly.

4. Tetanus, Diptheria, Pertussis (Tdap)
A single dose of Tdap is strongly recommended and documentation is required for students who have not previously received an adolescent or adult dose of Tdap. If the student has received the Tdap vaccination as an adolescent or an adult a Tetanus and Diphtheria (Td) booster is recommended every 10 years.

5. Hepatitis B
Documentation of laboratory evidence of immunity to Hepatitis B surface antibody is required. If serology (blood work) results indicate non-immunity or indeterminate result, refer to the OHA/OMA Communicable Disease Surveillance for additional vaccination information. In the event the student declines vaccination the University/College must counsel susceptible students of the infection risks related to their activities in the Health Centre and inform the Health Centre accordingly.

6. Influenza – An annual influenza vaccination is strongly recommended. Pregnancy and breast- feeding are NOT considered contraindications to influenza vaccination.

Fit Testing - N95 Respirators

In accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations for Industrial Establishments, Regulation. 851, the Regulation respecting Healthcare and Residential Facilities, Regulation 67/93 the Canadian Standards Association Standard Z94.4-11, Selection, Use and Care of Respirators and the Ontario Health Centre Association and the OMA/OHACommunicable Disease Surveillance Protocols all students must meet the following non-academic requirement prior to clinical placements at SJHC. Medical trainees are responsible for any costs incurred.

Trainees who will have direct patient contact are required to be fit-tested and educated for N95 Respirators that are used in the Health Centre. The legislation, standard and protocols referenced above provide detailed information on fit testing and educational requirements. Fit testing is required every 24 months. Please ensure this requirement is met prior to the placement start date.

Please note the N95 respirator make and models available at SJHC are as follows: 3M 8210, 3M 8110S and 3M 1870. The University/College will advise the student in writing of any alternate N95 respirators e.g. 3M 9210. If, through fit testing, you have been advised to use a respirator that we do not have in stock, please refrain from seeing respiratory isolation patients and contact the Medical Education Coordinator.

Code of Conduct

Trainees are required to review the Health Centre’s Code of Conduct and sign the related form to acknowledge that they agree to conduct themselves in accordance with these values-based behaviours. Any trainee who attends registration and orientation process with the Medical Education Coordinator will be asked to sign the agreement at that time. If trainees are not able to attend the registration and orientation, they are to contact the Medical Education Coordinator to review the Code of Conduct and sign the form.

Confidentiality & Security of Information and Internet Access & Usage

Trainees are required to review the Health Centre’s Security of Information and Confidentiality’ and the ‘Internet Access and Usage’ policies and sign the related confidentiality agreement before they can have access to patients or to their confidential information. All trainees who complete the registration and orientation process with the Medical Education Coordinator will be asked to sign the agreement at that time. If trainees are not able to attend the registration and orientation, they are to contact the Medical Education Coordinator to schedule a privacy session and/or to obtain full copies of the Security of Information and Confidentiality Policy (Policy # SJ10-01-01) and the Internet Access & Usage Policy (SJ10-02-01) in effect at the Health Centre.

Safety and Security Services

Staff Escorts

Staff escorts are available for those who are working after regular business hours. An escort to / from your vehicle / nearest TTC stop can be arranged through Security Services by calling ext 6382/3382 or page the Charge Officer at 416-739-5335.

Badge Access

There are a variety of departments in the Health Centre are accessible by badge access only. Access levels for trainees are determined by the Department of Medical Education & Scholarship (DMES) in conjunction with the clinical department providing the rotation experience.

Lockdown Hours

In compliance with St. Joseph’s Health Centre (SJHC) policy, the Health Centre is available via badge access only after hours from 21:00 to 05:45 hours. The only area that is accessible 24 hours without a badge is the Emergency entrance.

Pin Pad Locks

A number of rooms in the Health Centre are equipped with Pin Pad Locks (i.e. On-Call Rooms, Doctor’s Lounge / Office, Change Rooms, etc.) For access to specific areas please contact the DMES or the clinical department who manages the room.

Surveillance

SJHC is monitored by Security Services through video surveillance methods. Security Services also regularly patrols the Health Centre grounds and Clinical Departments.

Code White Buttons

For emergency assistance each unit is equipped with Code White Buttons (mobile or stationary). All staff and students should familiarize themselves with the location and protocol for activating the Code White procedure.

Bike Racks

Bike racks can be found at various locations on the Health Centre grounds. Although these areas are patrolled regularly by Security staff, we advise all learners to lock their bicycles before entering the Health Centre. It is also important to remove any valuable items that you may be carrying on your bike.
