Update on voluntary integration planning between Providence Healthcare, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and St. Michael’s hospital

On behalf of each of the Boards of Providence Healthcare, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and St. Michael’s Hospital, we are pleased to announce that we have formally submitted a proposal for voluntary integration to the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network (TC LHIN).

This is a significant milestone that is supported by the Sisters of St. Joseph and Catholic Health Sponsors of Ontario, as it signals to our patients and our communities that our shared purpose of delivering high quality, safe patient care and our joint mission of serving the disadvantaged will be enhanced and sustained by coming together and leveraging the unique strengths of each partner.

In the tradition of the Sisters, our organizations are committed to providing compassionate care to the most marginalized or disadvantaged, including the homeless and the frail elderly. Together, the new health network will strengthen our shared purpose to advance the health of our urban communities – providing health services across the spectrum of care for all our patients, residents and clients, from primary care through tertiary/quaternary to post-acute through rehabilitation, palliative care and long-term care.

Today’s health-care landscape is changing – people are living longer and developing complex and chronic illnesses that have them relying on health care services more than ever before. At the same time, new funding models demand organizations to continually find new ways to be efficient while improving quality and patient safety. This means hospitals in Toronto and across Ontario need to be responsive to ensure sustainability for the people they serve.

The new organization will become one of Canada’s largest networks with a single governance and management model that will benefit patients, our respective communities and the health system as a whole by providing increased access to more local and integrated care. Together we will be able to make decisions based on value and quality, to sustain our network for our communities for generations to come and enhance our academic and education mandate while expanding our research focus on urban health to study and better understand the determinants of health and their impacts on the health of our communities. The organizations also believe that together, we can become a stronger voice within the City of Toronto and Toronto Central LHIN for community population health specifically focused on patients’ social determinants of health like greater access to housing, nutrition and mental health and addiction services for the marginalized populations we serve.

We are committed to keeping you informed and welcome your input and feedback in the months ahead as the Toronto Central LHIN reviews our business proposal. We have created a joint website to keep you informed as we explore the potential for integrating our organizations.
