Withdrawal Management Service (WMS)
Salary: $33.23 to $46.75 per hour ; 25 year rate - $47.57 per hour
*Initially Monday to Friday, 8 hr day shifts; may require evenings or weekends in future.
* Available to rotate on all shifts required if service expands outside Monday to Friday days.
The Withdrawal Management Service (WMS) is a 26 bed unit dedicated to meeting the needs of patients who present for assistance in managing substance use and addictions. Patients in the WMS often have co-occurring mental health and/or medical issues. The registered nurse in WMS is a new regulated health care provider role for the service, who will work within a team of addiction service workers. The service also has support from two Nurse Practitioners shared across 5 WMS sites in the TC-LHIN. We are seeking a nurse with interest and competency in the development of this new nursing role in our service.
Working in collaboration with the Emergency Department, Addiction Medicine Service and the WMS team, the WMS Registered Nurse will conduct rapid physical/medical assessments, mental health, addictions and risk assessments and stabilization of patients presenting directly to WMS or being transferred from Emergency Departments. You will also be required to provide the full scope of nursing care to patients through all stages of withdrawal and treatment.
The ideal candidate will possess superior nursing and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated competence in the care of patients in crisis and who use substances or have addictions. You are a team player, able to think critically, work independently and collaboratively alongside non-regulated health care professionals. You have a passion for quality in healthcare, a philosophy and approach to substance use and mental health, incorporating recovery, harm reduction and hopefulness. You will demonstrate the ability to incorporate current evidence and best practice into plans of care and in the provision of your professional nursing services. You will approach the planning, delivery of care to patients and families in a manner promoting health and well-being, recognizing patient dignity and includes patients / families as essential partners in the delivery of healthcare. As a member of our Withdrawal Management Service health team, you are highly-adaptable, and thrive in a fast paced environment. You will also be responsible for patients requiring medical clearance and/or ongoing medical assessment and care. The Registered Nurse will be committed to continuous professional development of their nursing competencies.
1. Currently registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
2. BScN preferred; Canadian Nurses Association (C.N.A) Certificate in Psychiatric Nursing preferred
3. Current BLS/CPR.
4. Non-Violent Crisis Prevention and Intervention or Stop Harm and Violence education required within 3 months of start date.
5. Two years of recent mental health and addictions nursing experience required; community or primary care setting preferred (recent within last 5 years), including caring for clients with addictions or substance abuse issues/ concurrent disorders.
6. Experience and competence with medical nursing, physical health assessment and management of acute intoxication and withdrawal is required.
7. Demonstrated ability to work in a self-directed manner using well developed leadership, critical thinking, organizational and problem solving skills.
8. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
8. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to patient and family centered care.
9. Demonstrated passion for change and ongoing improvement in support of patient care and safety.
10. Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively within an interprofessional team environment.

13. Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and application of recovery, harm reduction, addiction treatment, pharmacotherapy, and trauma informed approaches.
14. Proficiency in the application of de-escalation and de-briefing skills.
15. Demonstrated recovery-focused skills in bio-psychosocial assessment, mental status assessments,
differential diagnosis, treatment and transitional care of mental health and addictions patients.
16. Demonstrated knowledge and application of legislation guiding mental health and addiction nursing practice (example, Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act).
17. Demonstrated alignment with St. Joseph's Health Centre values.
18. Ability to type notes and access/navigate hospital electronic systems, email and the internet for the provision of care to patients.
19. Evidence of ongoing professional development and learning.
20. Satisfactory attendance record.
