Product recall alert: Abbott Nutrition liquid diet products

On Oct. 16, 2018, the network received a Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) nation-wide food recall notice for Abbott Nutrition with concerns about possible bacterial contamination in the following formulated liquid diet products:

Suplena; PediaSure, PediaSure Plus and PediaSure Fibre; Osmolite 1.2 Cal; Jevity 1 Cal, Jevity 1.2 Cal and Jevity 1.5 Cal; Glucerna 1.0 Cal – Vanilla; Ensure Plus; and Ensure Fibre

Full list of products affected by this recall.

This is an expansion of the recall issued in September regarding Abbott Two Cal brand and Abbott Promote brand. As with the previous recall, the type of bacterial contamination is unknown – this recall was triggered by consumer complaints and the CFIA is investigating. We have identified six affected products at St. Michael’s and one product each at Providence and St. Joseph’s. We have initiated our food product recall procedure and removed all related products from circulation at all sites and have secured substitute stock for distribution. Our Registered Dietitians are working closely with patients and staff to update nutrition orders, as needed. There have been no reported patient food safety events at any of the sites.

We continue to work with our suppliers and will determine what next steps are needed. Please ensure your staff are advised of this recall immediately.
