Academic Achievement Day recognizes winners of internal and external teaching awards, who come from various departments and professions across St. Joe’s. It also showcases academic abstracts concerning various research and quality improvement initiatives taking place at St. Joe’s.

This event highlights academic scholarship and exceptional achievements in teaching, education and mentorship by our physicians and healthcare professional team over the past academic year.

The 5th Annual Academic Achievement Day took place on Friday June 10, 2016 hosted by the Departments of Medical Education & Scholarship (DMES) and Interprofessional Practice (IPP). This event supports SJHC Vision to Advance the Health of our Community by being Canada’s Best Community Teaching Health Centre.

Poster Fair or Presentation Categories

Academic Abstracts may be peer-reviewed (optional) or hospital-based quality improvement initiatives that have either a clinical or educational focus. Abstracts for each category will be rated on:

  • Relevance of research subject to at least one priority in SJHC’s Strategic Plan
  • The three strategic priorities of the Plan are (1) Creating Seamless Transitions of Care, (2) Delivering an Exceptional Experience, and (3) Shaping Care through Teaching and Education.
  • Identification of a clear research question or clinical issue with identifiable outcomes
  • Use of appropriate methodology/study design to garner identified outcomes
  • Potential impact to achieve SJHC’s vision: Advancing the Health of Our Community by being Canada’s Best Community Teaching Health Centre
  • Potential impact to advance best practices within the identified subject area
  • Identify how your work may improve, advance, and/or reflects Patient Family Centered Care at St. Joseph’s Health Centre

Submission Process:

  • Abstracts may be submitted by employees, students volunteers or physicians in good standing with Active, Associate, or Courtesy privileges at St. Joseph’s Health Centre.
  • The top two (2) rated abstracts submitted in the Presentation category will be selected to present – one of which will be selected as the Best Academic Abstract winner.

Deadline:

Abstracts must be submitted using the online form (link below) Wednesday May 11, 2016. Late submissions will not be accepted.

Selection Process:

The Academic Abstract Review Committee will adjudicate the abstract submissions and select the Poster Fair & Presentation candidates. Participants will be informed of successful applications by Wednesday May 30, 2016. The top two (2) rated abstracts submitted in the Presentation category will be selected to present – one of which will be selected as the Best Academic Abstract winner. The winner will be announced at Academic Achievement Day after the Abstract Presentations.

Incomplete submissions will be discarded without consideration.

Clinical Teaching Award Nominations

AWARDS: Undergraduate and Postgraduate Categories
Maximum 1 award per category

The DMES Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award was established to recognize healthcare professionals and physicians who have had a significant impact on the educational development of medical students, medical residents and fellows.

The nominee must have:

  1. Demonstrated ability to be an excellent role model as evidenced in the CanMEDS Framework
  2. Demonstrated utilization of innovative and creative teaching methods
  3. Demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching (excellent rapport with learners)

The nominee must be an employee or physician in good standing with Active, Associate or Courtesy privileges at St. Joseph’s Health Centre. Self-nominations and nomination of close-relation (e.g. spouse, sibling, or child) will not be accepted. There will only be one recipient for each award. The Department of Medical Education & Scholarship (DMES) and Interprofessional Practice (IPP) Awards Committee will adjudicate the nominations and select the recipients. A previous winner may be nominated for an award in the same category only after a lapse of three (3) years. A previous winner may be nominated for an award in a different category from a previous award at any time.

Nomination Process:

Nominations may be submitted by any physician, health professional, staff member, student, resident or fellow at St. Joseph’s Health Centre. Award winners will be determined solely on the basis of the documentation provided. Please ensure that the person being nominated has agreed to accept the nomination. Interprofessional Education Teaching Award

Award Criteria:

The Interprofessional Education Teaching Award was established to recognize a person or team who advances interprofessional education by preparing students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for collaborative interprofessional teamwork.

This person/team supports different professions in learning with, from and about each other to improve collaboration and quality of care. They model St. Joseph’s five (5) core competencies for collaboration which are: trust and respect; knowledge of different team members’ roles; appreciating differences and conflict resolution; willingness to share power; and involvement in shared decision making.

The nominee must be an employee, volunteer or physician in good standing with Active, Associate or Courtesy privileges at St. Joseph’s Health Centre. Self-nominations and nomination of close-relation (e.g. spouse, sibling, or child) will not be accepted. The Department of Medical Education & Scholarship (DMES) and Interprofessional Practice (IPP) Awards Committee will adjudicate the nominations and select the recipient. A previous winner may be nominated only after a lapse of three (3) years.

The nominee must be an employee, volunteer or physician in good standing with Active, Associate or Courtesy privileges at St. Joseph’s Health Centre. This award is open to healthcare professionals without professional affiliations. Self-nominations and nomination of close-relation (e.g. spouse, sibling, or child) will not be accepted The Department of Medical Education & Scholarship (DMES) and Interprofessional Practice (IPP) Awards Committee will adjudicate the nominations and select the recipient.
