St. Joseph's Health Centre, an academic community teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto, is seeking applications from qualified and highly motivated individuals to fill the position of part time 0.5 FTE Medical Microbiologist within the Department of Laboratory Medicine.
Our Hospital cares for adult and pediatric patients with a wide variety of infectious diseases. It serves the west end of Toronto community with close to 97,000 ER visits per year. The Microbiology Laboratory processes 56,000 specimens per year, in the areas of general bacteriology, and molecular diagnostics. Currently, there is an exciting laboratory integration with St. Michael's Hospital, and this will enhance the diagnostic capabilities at St. Joseph's. As such, the incumbent will be part of a larger microbiologist group, with the associated clinical, teaching and research opportunities.
The successful candidate will collaborate with and provide consultative services to a dynamic team of professionals in the microbiology laboratory, infection prevention and control program, antimicrobial stewardship program, and other physicians and healthcare professionals. It is expected that the candidate has sufficient experience and expertise to manage the daily microbiology service demands, including call on nights and week-ends on a rotational basis, in order to facilitate the delivery of innovative, high quality, full service microbiology. In addition, the medical microbiologist will participate in the laboratory quality management and biosafety programs. There will be opportunities for the microbiologist to engage in academic research, teaching and other creative professional activities. Opportunities for clinical infectious disease consultations for inpatients and outpatients are available.
Candidates shall have an MD degree and hold certification in Medical Microbiology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or a comparable organization.
