In your role as the Advanced Practice Clinical Educator (APCE) – Neonatal Intensive Care & Paediatrics, you will be accountable for the planning, leading, implementing and evaluating a comprehensive practice and educational program for all members of the interprofessional team that care for paediatric and neonates requiring intensive care. Reporting to the Collaborative Practice Leader, you will work in partnership with the Patient Care Managers, APCEs, and other leadership team members and staff.. You will work to promote clinical excellence in patient and family centred care (PFCC) utilizing your knowledge of evidence based practices working in collaboration with members of the interprofessional team. As the successful candidate, you will continuously role model and mentor others to achieve success. You are an energetic person who takes pride in building strong and effective interpersonal relationships.
As the successful candidate, you will lead staff and support program development in the NICU and Paediatric departments, as a clinical expert, change agent, leader, educator, consultant, researcher, and facilitator. Your knowledge and expertise, best practices for patients, PFCC and interprofessional care, will make you an ideal candidate for this role. Your philosophy of education and practice excellence promotes a positive, innovative and continuous learning climate and is enhanced by your enthusiasm in patient care. You will use best practices to continually drive quality improvement by engaging with the interprofessional team to assess, plan, implement and evaluate change initiatives. The Advanced Practice Clinical Educator for Neonatal Intensive Care and Paediatrics improves patient and family outcomes by:
• Identifying clinical practice competencies and learning needs for areas that provide paediatric and neonatal intensive care
• Designing, implementing and evaluating practice initiatives/educational programs that meet patient/staff needs that improve patient outcomes
• Coaching interprofessional staff at the bedside with clinical decision making and integration of best practice supporting Patient & Family Centred Care and Interprofessional Collaboration, in a fast-paced highly complex and acute environment.
• Leading clinical quality improvement initiatives.
• Developing and coordinating processes and strategies that enable and advance professional practice and ongoing education/training.
• Promote and model an environment that fosters continuous learning and professional practice for program staff.
1. Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing required.
2. Master's Degree in Nursing required, or in progress.
3. Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
4. Neonatal Intensive Care Certificate preferred.
5. Current Neonatal Resuscitation certificate required or obtained within 4 months of hire; NRP Instructor preferred.
6. Current PALS certificate required.
7. Breastfeeding certificate preferred.
8. Minimum 3-5 years of recent relevant clinical experience. Demonstrated expertise in contemporary neonatal intensive care and paediatric nursing. Experience in a tertiary care setting preferred.
9. A minimum of 2 years recent experience in a formal adult education role related to neonatal and/or paediatric nursing.
10. Membership of clinically relevant professional organizations (ex. CANN, ANN, AWHONN, CAPHC) preferred or willingness to join.
11. Previous demonstrated ability to lead quality improvement clinical projects preferred.
12. Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based standards of practice for the care of healthy newborns and newborns requiring intensive care and the full spectrum of paediatric clients (newborn to 18 years).
13. Demonstrated knowledge and evidence of the ability to integrate the principles of family centred care principles into practice.
14. Demonstrated ability to apply adult education principles, develop, implement and evaluate education programs, including but not limited to competency based orientation of staff with varying levels of previous experience.
15. Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and revise policies, procedures, guidelines, standards of practice and medical directives.
16. Demonstrated skills in the use of research in the practice setting, clinical education planning, consultation and facilitation.
17. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication (written and verbal).
18. Uses a range of communication strategies in one-to-one and group situations.
19. Critical thinking, analytical, attention to detail, multi-tasking and problem-solving skills.
20. Must be able to work under pressure, meet deadlines in a fast paced environment reflecting rapid cycle change.
21. Must be self-directed and able to work independently and in a team environment.
22. Demonstrated ability to lead and facilitate groups effectively.
23. Strong communication skills and ability to establish positive relationships with all staff and physicians on the team.
24. Competence in various computer programs, i.e. word processing and presentation software.
25. Satisfactory attendance record.
