Addictions Services

Our Addictions Services program offers specialized treatment options for patients who are admitted to the Health Centre, and those who we care for on an outpatient basis. We help individuals and families with problems created by the use of alcohol and other substances. Our goal is to provide compassionate care that treats our clients with dignity and respect, giving them treatment options that meet their diverse needs.

Addiction Services spans across both the Health Centre’s Family Medicine and Mental Health Departments, and are integrated with multiple programs throughout the hospital. Our specialists include emergency addiction crisis workers, addiction medicine consultation-liaison services, addiction medicine physicians, residents and nurses.

Patients with appointments should register in our Family Medicine Clinic, located on the ground floor, East entrance. Please bring your health card to each appointment.

Addiction Medicine Services

Smoking Cessation Clinic

Supporting the hospital’s goal of being a smoke-free facility, this multidisciplinary service offers pharmacotherapy and counselling related to stopping smoking.

No referral is necessary. Please call 416-530-6000 ext. 3969 to book an appointment.

Addiction Shared Care

A referral program that offers collaborative care between our addiction physicians and family physicians for patients with substance use disorders.

Patients can be referred for an assessment by faxing a referral to 416-530-6106 or by calling 416-530-6000 ext. 3969.

Rapid Access Clinic (RAC)

Brief support/referral for patients not currently connected to addiction recovery resources.

This clinic runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Register at Family Medicine, located on the ground floor, East entrance.

Toronto Centre for Substance Use in Pregnancy (T-CUP)

OB and addiction care offered to pregnant women abusing substances.

Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention

This is a ten week aftercare group integrating cognitive-behavioral relapse prevention skills and mindfulness meditation practice.

Our outpatient services provide education, motivation and support and provide links to community resources and treatment services, empowering individuals to make healthy lifestyle changes.

We offer a wide range of outpatient programs that include:

  • Day Withdrawal Program – provides support to clients who are no longer experiencing acute withdrawal symptoms, do not require 24/7 observation of their withdrawals and are looking to make positive changes with their substance use. The day program runs Monday to Friday for up to three weeks and includes group sessions, individualized support and auricular acupuncture.

  • Community Withdrawal Management – provides withdrawal support to those who are unable to access residential or day withdrawal management services and who are experiencing mild to moderate withdrawals. A community addiction worker visits you in your home and, with your participation, establishes a circle of care to support you during the early recovery process.

  • Continuing Care Group – provides ongoing group support for clients in the maintenance phase of their recovery. This group meets Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Our care team:
Community Addiction Service Workers: provide screening and assessment to determine appropriate levels of care required by individuals. This includes therapeutic counselling, treatment planning, group facilitation including auricular acupuncture and case management.

Designed to promote wellness and recovery from substance abuse in a residential setting, our voluntary non-medical withdrawal management service facility houses 26 beds for both male and female clients.

We are a smoke-free facility and will not facilitate the use of tobacco products during your stay. We do supply nicotine replacement therapy.

We provide a complete withdrawal management service including:

  • Support and basic care during withdrawal
  • Help in identifying and making referrals for other medical assistance if needed
  • Assistance in identifying other treatment resources and services
  • Psycho-educational groups
  • Auricular acupuncture
  • Links to self-help programs as well as other community supports

When preparing for your stay with us, clients should plan to bring:

  • Home medications including those for nicotine replacement therapy
  • OHIP card (preferred but not required)
  • Toiletries (please do not bring any perfumes or sprays as we are a scent-free environment)
  • Clothing
  • Books/reading material

Please do not bring any valuables including electronics. Items such as cellphones will be placed in a secure area upon admission.

Please make transportation arrangements in advance for when you are discharged.

Our care team includes

  • Addiction service workers – provide care and supportive counselling to clients during the withdrawal process. They help clients identify their goals and use motivational interviewing for the purpose of encouraging clients to view their substance use/abuse from a treatable perspective.
  • Unit service aides – help maintain a clean and inviting environment which promotes the comfort of our clients.
  • Unit secretary – provides administrative support and ensures that the daily operating supplies are available to programs.
