Respiratory outbreak – visitor information

January 15, 2018 —  St. Joseph’s Health Centre is currently experiencing outbreaks of influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) on our 4M patient care unit. Please note the following if you are planning on visiting the Health Centre or plan on visiting a patient on this affected unit:

  • If you are feeling unwell or have respiratory symptoms of any kind, please do not visit the Health Centre until you are symptom-free.
  • For the duration of your visit, please clean your hands frequently and thoroughly and use the hand sanitizing stations conveniently located throughout the Health Centre.
  • For those visiting patients on an affected unit, visitor restrictions may be in place, including a limit of two visitors per patient at a time. Please contact the unit ahead of time so that you are aware of any special arrangements or restrictions in place.
  • Those visiting patients on an affected unit may also be asked to wear protective clothing such as gloves, gown and mask to help prevent the spread of respiratory illness. Please follow the directions of the nursing staff on the unit.

Longer than usual wait times
Please note that, to protect the health and safety of patients and those providing care, infection prevention and control protocols often mean patient care units experiencing an outbreak are closed to new admissions. This can result in longer than usual wait times in the Emergency Department and longer waits to be admitted or transferred to different parts of the hospital. This may also impact scheduled non-urgent surgeries. Patients will be notified promptly of any surgery schedule changes and will be given priority at the earliest possible date to reschedule.

We apologize in advance for any inconvenience rescheduled appointments may cause or for any delays you or a loved one may experience while at the health centre.

Influenza prevention
Toronto Public Health is reporting increased activity of respiratory illness – including influenza – in the community and active outbreaks in a number of health-care centres. If you have not already done so and are able to, please consider getting the flu shot at your local pharmacy or doctor’s office.

We are also offering flu shots in our outpatient pharmacy located in the hospital on the ground floor in our East wing. People five years and older can come – no appointment necessary – between 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday – please bring your health card.
