For the past 30 years St. Joe’s Obstetrician/Gynecologist Dr. Joe Daly has returned to the Caribbean island of Montserrat to bring specialized health services to the 5,000 people who live there. This humanitarian mission has caught the attention of Queen Elizabeth II; Dr. Daly will become a Member of the Order of the British Empire, a prestigious award presented for outstanding service to the community, later this year in England for his work.
“I’m very humbled,” said Dr. Daly. “I don’t see this as something I did alone – if it weren’t for the willingness of my colleagues and friends, this would not have happened so I will gladly accept the award on their behalf as well.”
Born in Montserrat, Dr. Daly has been visiting the island for more than three decades – taking his colleagues and equipment with him. Through these visits, residents on the island have had access to specialized healthcare services that otherwise would not be available on the island.
Dr. Daly’s work is done through the Montserrat Visiting Consultant Program, an independently-run organization he started that works in collaboration with the Montserrat government to bring specialists to the island. During visits, healthcare specialists also take time to give talks at local centres and provide education to the community.
