Catherine Gareau had been a research librarian for over 25 years when she suffered a stroke that left her unable to work as she focused on re-learning basic skills.
“They say people who have strokes lose what they love the most and I definitely talked a lot, so I lost my words for some time,” she said.
As part of her rehabilitation, Catherine was encouraged to volunteer. “I thought it would be hard to find a place that could accommodate me, but the hospital has been amazing — I learn something new every day,” she said.
It didn’t take long for Catherine to bring her love of reading to St. Joe’s. Just a month after joining our team, she created a mobile library that brings donated books around to patient units.
“Books are excellent companions. Some people are sleeping or not interested, but many patients are avid readers and when I see their eyes light up — it makes it all worth it.”
